The International Rock Climbing Festival of Kalymnos 2009 - a P. S. from Katerina

The 4th International Rock Climbing Festival of Kalymnos wound up on the 26th – and what a fabulous time it had been for all! Already the route setters are looking for a 9a+

... Already the climbers who were on the crags these memorable five days are booking for their Autumn trip –
that is, those who have left at all. Because quite a few have extended their stays, well after the Fest.

Sorry Emmanuelle, sorry Jens, apologies to all of those who wanted to and couldn’t...

So, what made this particular Fest so special? Was it the wonderful feeling of togetherness? YES!

Was it the scootering all over an island of 111 sq klm and the warm welcome from its 13.000 inhabitants? YES!

Was it the casual walk form your hotel to your favourite crag? YES!?

Was it the beautiful weather that accompanied the climbers on everyone of the 1100 routes they tried? YES!

Was it the fun and the immediacy of the Bouldering in the port square? YES!

Was it the presence of Claude, Maya and Adam? YES!

Was it the excitement of the struggle at the Odyssey and the final victory thatleft cameramen, photographers and fans gaping and cheering? YES!

Yes, it was all of that and so much more.

Many thanks Giorgo, Aris, Kopa, Zafiri, Niko X 2, Luca, Poppy, Afroditi, Manoli and Evdoxia, Sofia X 2, little Coco ... and to all thosevolunteers who supported the event, before, during and after. Thanks to the Gardens, who swept away 3 awards to England.

Thanks to the local t.v. people who brought the pictures into the sitting rooms of families who, on this island famous for its Divers, feel more comfortable on the ocean bed than on the crags.

Thanks to the 4 National Channels (ERT, NET, Alpha, SKAI) that will spread the word that wondrous things are happening on the little island of Kalymnos.
